WAMU 88.5, Washington, DC’s NPR news station, has launched Dish City, a seven-episode podcast series that dives deep into the District’s most distinctive and revealing foods.
Hosts Ruth Tam and Patrick Fort tell the stories of the people and places that make DC’s iconic food famous. The series begins with a look at how the half-smoke became an inextricable part of DC’s cultural identity. Future episodes will dig into mumbo sauce, Ethiopian food, pupusas, and the famous “jumbo slice.”

“To outsiders, DC is a government town – but it’s also eclectic, diverse, and teeming with local culture and flavor. And nowhere is that better reflected than in the foods and dishes born or popularized here. Patrick and Ruth bring a sense of historical curiosity to this great new series that will give you a profound new understanding of DC,” said Andi McDaniel, Senior Director of Content and News. “We are proud to add Dish City to our growing portfolio of local and national podcasts.”

The first episode will be available September 12 with new episodes available on Thursdays.
