One of Metro Detroit's longest-tenured sports-talk voices has been let go.

Matt Shepard, who has hosted a morning show on WDFN (1130-AM) since 2001, got the ax Monday following his final show, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The source requested anonymity because the station hasn't formally announced the decision.

Matt Shepard has been fired by WDFN.

Shepard said he couldn’t comment on the situation, but sent out a tweet Tuesday morning.

As you can tell, my show is no longer," Shepard tweeted. "I thank the listeners (friends) for the support and conversation over the yrs. It's been an honor."

Shepard has long had a cult following in the area because his morning shows almost always stuck completely to sports, while competitors on 97.1 The Ticket and Detroit Sports 105.1 (until it switched formats) often used the airwaves to discuss pop culture, political and local news.

Shepard is also the play-by-play man for Michigan basketball and a reporter for Fox Sports Detroit.

There were other iHeart Media cuts Monday, including multiple layoffs in Grand Rapids.
