Warshaw Enters The Streaming Business – In NYC

1

Connoisseur CEO Jeff Warshaw, along with big-time programmer Michael Sharkey, has launched a new streaming app aimed at helping New York City music fans discover new music and fun stuff to do in the Big Apple. The app is called Satori (you can also listen online) and the jocks are broadcasting live 24/7 from Brooklyn. Warshaw tells Radio Ink what the goal of the new online radio station is…

The Satori Satmobile

“I believe that the streaming generation would fall in love with many of the things that radio does great: local service, compelling personalities, human-made music curation, sense of community, but a chunk of this group doesn’t consider radio “theirs.” He plans to get the word out by using paid media, social media, events, partnerships with local businesses, and with Satori’s personalities doing hand-to-hand combat. The company also has a very cool-looking “Satmobile.” Warshaw will not be using his radio stations to promote the station.

If you listen, which we did, you’ll hear unedited songs from different formats, including indie rock to hip hop and electronic. A company press release says, “The platform utilizes real data of what New Yorkers are listening to and combines that with a carefully curated selection of multi-genre music programming plus a dedication to keeping the best of New York culture alive.

Warshaw says communities are what make stations successful. “With Satori, we’re not just playing major artists, we’re championing music discovery and supporting the local community of individuals and businesses that make it special. Major artists are calling New York radio out for not supporting their local talent. Streaming services don’t have a sense of community or place. There is no human element.”

Satori will launch with a presence at Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall’s Island June 2 – 4, 2017, kicking off a summer of expertly culled programming throughout New York City, including a series of yet-to-be announced shows. Fans can keep an eye out for the Satori Satmobile, which will be broadcasting live from different neighborhoods across the five boroughs, in addition to an expansive out-of-home and digital campaign.

If the concept is successful in New York, Warshaw says he and Sharkey will roll it out in other cities. Satori is paying a statutory fee for the music, which is dictated by the number of listeners.
