And the for-profit FM is now asking the community for donations. According to The Santa Cruz Sentinel the 70-year-old station is turning to its listeners for support. In a station promo, owner Michael Zweling says, “KSCO has been my primary philanthropic project for over two decades and I could use some help. If you like KSCO and want to help it survive and thrive, send money. Anything at all will help.”

KSCO-1080 AM, is known for an array of local talk shows with perspectives from both sides of the political spectrum. The station featured nearly 90 local voices in 2016. Zwerling told the paper, “I don’t even want to be in the business unless we can have a real station with real people, a real heart, a real soul.” KSCO is not an NPR station.

Zwerling told the paper, “We’re certainly not a 501(c)3 but we have been, ever since I owned the station, a nonprofit not by choice. Zwerling has financed KSCO through income from multilevel marketing company Youngevity, which sells vitamins. KSCO broadcasts Dr, Joel Wallach’s syndicated show on the station, which generates income for Zwerling.
